TRUTH HAS MANY FACES
acrylic painting on canvas H.120 x W.100
“ Truth Has Many Faces “
This painting by Retsin is a reference to Magritte ’s iconic work , which depicts a man with an apple in front of his face. Magritte , the grandmaster of surrealism, focuses on the unconscious, the dream and the irrational. He is known for his surprising and disruptive images. Retsin adopts this visual language, but adds his own meaning, within an abstract and expressive environment.
The central figure with the apple, a symbol of knowledge and seduction, hides the face and thus the identity of the man. This raises questions about truth, identity and perception. It can be seen as a metaphor for the way we sometimes hide or distort the truth.
The background is a chaotic mix of colors, shapes and text fragments that refer to the multitude of perspectives and interpretations that exist. In addition, the title of the painting is an indirect reference to a motto of the French conceptual artist Ben, “la vérité est multiple “ . This emphasizes the idea that truth is not absolute and often depends on both our superficial society and the complexity of reality.
