Sibilla libica

The “Sibilla Libica” is the best-known pictorial representation in the ceiling fresco of the Sistine Chapel, painted by Michelangelo, where a total of five sibyls are depicted alternately with a series of seven biblical prophets. The Sybil, meaning ‘prophetess’ in classical mythology, is said to be the oldest and is said to have foretold “the coming of the day when all that is hidden will finally be revealed.” Michelangelo has depicted her in a movement in which she turns as if she wants to put down or pick up the book behind her.

In this painting Retsin has adopted the same theme from Michelangelo, but with the principle of postmodernist ‘appropriation art’. bringing images by other artists into a new context. On a background of collages and abstract painting techniques, he paints the central figure with the effect of the stencil typical of street artists such as Banksy and Blek le rat.
