LE PENSEUR (the thinker)

acrylic & collages painting on canvas  H.120 x  W.100

“Le Penseur”

“The Thinker”, initially titled The Poet, is a masterpiece by Auguste Rodin. This sculpture was created in Paris in 1880 as part of the monumental work “La Porte De l’Enfer”. Very quickly, “the Thinker” became separate from the whole, an emblematic and universal work. It is through his pose, his allegorical representation, that “the Thinker” radiates both an expressive physical force and an introspective and spiritual thinking.

*****

In RETSIN’s painting, “the Thinker” with the classic static pose is essentially preserved. The figure, with its bowed head, remains a universal symbol of deep thought, doubt and search for answers. Retsin’s use of the stencil technique has an innovative effect on the original work. Simplifying the figure into a blueprint of lines and surfaces creates a sense of fragmentation, characteristic of contemporary street art.
