LE BAISER (the kiss)
acrylic & collages painting on canvas H.120 x W.120
“Le Baiser ”
“the Kiss” was originally called Francesca da Rimini. It is a sculpture created by the French sculptor Auguste Rodin . Designed around 1881, it was initially intended as one of the elements of the monumental work ’the gate of hell’ (inspired by the poetry of Dante Alighieri ; la divina commedia ) Like the “thinker “, another masterpiece issued from ‘ the gate of hell ‘ , it was shortly after considered a separate work of art and exhibited in 1887.
*****
RETSIN’s painting offers a personal interpretation of Rodin’s famous sculpture with a number of specific choices in style, vision and, above all, a tribute to a particular iconic work of art. The background is a chaotic mix of abstract shapes and a striking color palette, collages, texts, tags and graffiti. This is in full contrast to the couple’s intimate pose. The background suggests a world of emotions, thoughts and memories swirling around the couple. “LOVE”, which is prominently featured in the painting, emphasizes the passion, feelings and connection of both characters from Dante Alighieri ’s story about the complexity of human relationships, which will ultimately prove fatal.
