HERMES
HERMES
Hermes is a figure from Greek mythology. He is the son of the supreme god Zeus and the mountain nymph Maia and is known as the messenger of the Gods. With the help of his winged attributes he constantly floated through the air and Hermes became not only the god of trade, but also the patron of travelers and finally he was honoured because of his eloquence. In Roman mythology it ‘s Mercury who was identified with Hermes and like him, the god of trade, travelers and ….. thieves!
Jean Baptiste Pigalle ( 1714 – 1785 ) , French sculptor , sculpted his famous “ Mercure attachant ses talonnières “. In classical Greek antiquity, Hermes is depicted very statically, while J.B.Pigalle has given his ‘Mercury’ a lively pose in a virtuoso manner. The original marble sculpture is now in the Louvre .
Retsin Gilbert has simplified the image of Pigalle ’s original work into a stencil, a blueprint of lines and planes, a technique frequently used in contemporary urban art, with street- art artists such as Banksy and Blek le Rat.
